In Focus | Maggie Wood of Inner Haven Decorating

Maggie Wood is a creative person who has channelled that energy into her business, Inner Haven Decorating. She believes strongly in the premise that your home should be just that: A place where you can go and retreat from the world, live comfortably and entertain guests in style. To that end, she has recently opened a design studio in Town Centre Mall in downtown Kelowna to help her serve her clients better. Maggie loves to give them the 'Wow' factor in the work she does designing their own personal inner haven. Maggie is also passionate about the environment and seeks to use products that won't harm it while in every small way she can contributing to sustainability. Today Maggie and Inner Haven Decorating are In Focus.

What do you always find yourself saying?
"A house is much more than a mere shelter, it should lift us emotionally and spiritually."
- John Saladino

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Gregg Braden, would love to pick his brain about science and spirituality.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
I don't really feel comfortable with that but I suppose if it had anything to do with helping animals out then I would gladly accept it with a smile on my face.

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Nikola Tesla one of the first proponents of renewable energy, the man was way ahead of his time and an absolute genius.

Who inspires you?
From a professional point of view, the original Designer Guys, Chris and Steve do, they are always so engaging and fun, also love Candice Olsen, she has such an elegant style of decorating.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Tour Europe and Africa, open up an animal sanctuary or rescue and live completely green and sustainable one day.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
I'm be more of a row boat kind of girl and would name her Phoebe, after my beloved Pomeranian that passed away years ago.

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
I don't want to see into the future. I'm afraid the world would be in rougher shape than it is now. ;)

What are you passionate about?
Obviously decorating but I adore animals and have fostered dogs before. I would also love to see us embrace a much greener future one day.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
The day I was born. ;) Just happy to be alive.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Opening up my own storefront is a big one.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
I dig Bouchons, like the owners and RauDZ is great because they try to use local ingredients.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
Anything to do with good music, wine and food. I wish we had a Heritage Days Festival here like they do in Edmonton.

Playing tennis is my favourite activity when I can get around to it.

Where can people find you or your business online?

Where can people find your business on Facebook?
https://www.facebook.com/innerhavendecorating/info

What is your mission?
The home should reflect a safe haven where you can go to retreat from the world, live comfortably and entertain family and friends.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
I look forward to growing as a business in the community and establishing some really great relationships with my clientele. I love giving people that 'Wow' factor when it comes to decorating! The feedback from my clients at the end of a project gives me all the satisfaction that I need.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in 5 years?
I plan to keep growing and be surrounded by a wonderfully creative staff in the near future.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Again Candice Olsen is a favourite but I'm also really inspired by Sarah Richardson's fun and unpretentious decorating style.

What 3 qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Integrity is a big one with me, I also tend to really value that trait in people. Many people tend to find designers unapproachable and a bit pretentious and I can happily say I am neither one of those. Empathetic, I really ask questions and try to get inside my clients' heads!

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
The only foolish question is the one that goes unasked.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
Well I hope to start growing and employing some local talent one day. I like shopping at the little mom-and-pop stores as opposed to your big box stores, you can't always do that with suppliers but I do try. I'm also very conscious when it comes to sustainability and offer products that aren't harmful to the environment - blind and fabrics options.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Renewable energy

If I could change 1 thing about Kelowna, it would be:
I wish it was more dog friendly.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The mix of people, would like to see it become even more multicultural actually.

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Chris Dewhurst from Shapers Salon my neighbour here in the mall.
