Retail labels play an important step in marketing products to specific shoppers’ around the globe, for example gluten-free or locally grown. But soon there will be another symbol added to the mix: women owned.
Walmart has teamed up with Women’s Business Enterprise National Council and WEConnect International to create the new logo which will bring consumer recognition of products provided by women-owned businesses. Those that are certified will be stamped with the new packaging and sold on Walmart store shelves.
In 2011 the retail giant pledged to source $20 billion of products from U.S. women-owned businesses by 2016.
“At Walmart we are committed to empowering women and impacting women-owned businesses from around the world – and so are our customers. In fact, we recently conducted a survey that found 90 per cent of female customers in the US would go out of their way to purchase products from women, believing they would offer higher quality,” said MiKaela Wardlaw Lemmon, senior director of Women’s Economic Empowerment at Walmart.
