Calm as Your Superpower

So yeah, being calm isn't always easy. All of us can get hot-headed about little things, big things, and in-the-middle things. Red lights, slow drivers, fast drivers, people smoking right outside doorways, people at work who you don't see eye to eye with, people who nag you, people who do things you don't agree with, perhaps your family and loved ones, even lineups, spilled coffee or not getting your way. There are a million things that can make you lose your cool. Let it be known there will always be something for you to lose your marbles over. Also, let it be known that I've learned this over time and it's something I have to check in with constantly. Curious about my personal favourite? Red lights.

By nature, you are somewhere on a continuum of always calm and, shall we say uppity, depending on any given circumstance. Some of us are inherently more chill whereas someone of us are less tolerant of things that we don't necessarily agree with. Here's the thing: you can teach yourself to be calm and use it as your superpower. Whoa, right? Let me tell you, I used to lose it over the dumbest things. I used to be a little hot-under-the-collar and it usually had to do with not getting my way—crazy right? Through many means like yoga and meditation, life experience, a solid commitment to myself about how I want to live my life and what I want it to feel like, I've learned where my non-calm edges are. I've taught myself how to change my thoughts when I don't like something. I'm continuing to drop into all the moments that I'm challenged and see what I can control + drop what I can't (which is usually the hardest part). Everything is a learning.

When you drop into your superpower of staying calm no matter what's going on around you, it feels better. It reminds you that you are the only one in the driver's seat of your thoughts + emotions. Usually when you get mad, rattled, pissed about something it's a reaction and not a response. The difference between those things is A) your awareness of how you usually react + simply choosing another response or B) time practising A). This isn't to say you shouldn't get mad or be upset at things, this is remembering that you have a choice to use calm as your superpower. The thing about a superpower is not everyone has it but you can inspire people around you to practice their superpower abilities by doing it yourself. Keep going, you're amazing.
