Inaugural Culture Crawl Seeks To Unite Kelowna Arts, Culture, Business, and Community

For years, the concept of a Kelowna Culture Crawl has been brewing in the minds of Jolene Mackie and her friends in the local arts community. Three years after her return to the small but vibrant local arts scene, Kelowna's first Culture Crawl is set to take place.

The inaugural event will be taking place this Friday, as part of Kelowna's nation-wide participation in Culture Days.

“I truly think our vision reflects the grassroots initiative that Culture Days itself was spurred from,” says Mackie, “you will be able to 'crawl' around the downtown core – into the cultural district of Kelowna – and be welcomed with open arms to share in the diverse culture creators we have in Kelowna.”

The primary hub and launching point for the event is the newly founded 'working gallery', heART School. Once a stuffy office space above a busy downtown Starbucks, the units have been renovated into a bright, eclectic, and beautiful gallery and studio space This community-based, collective and creative atmosphere is the driving force behind the creation of the Culture Crawl.

Speaking of her greater inspiration and goals for the event, Mackie said, “Drawing from my experiences in Vancouver, and some inspiration from those around me, I see that when we unite as a whole, the sum is greater than the parts. This is the root of my concept for the culture crawl. By bringing together artists, businesses, city figures, and a multitude of art supporters, with each contributing their part, we will make this a wonderful, diverse and self sustaining art event in Kelowna.”

With that diversity in mind, Friday's Culture Crawl will see 12 different locations open their doors to the community, showcasing everything from artists to poetry, music to food, and everything in between. Guests are encouraged to interact with the places that they visit and speak with the artists, business owners, and other attendees. This kind of participation will, in turn, fuel a greater sense of community and appreciation for arts and culture in Kelowna, which is what Culture Days is all about.

The Culture Crawl will take place between 6 and 10pm and you can view the map below or visit Culture Crawl Kelowna online for more information.
