VIDEO: Crosswalk incident that could have been a lot worse

Just before 10 a.m. on Friday morning, a woman was hit by a black SUV while crossing the street at the corner of Leon Avenue and Pandosy Avenue in downtown Kelowna.

The woman walked away holding her back.

The camera footage shows a close call that could have been much worse.

Kelowna RCMP commented on the incident, reminding drivers to use extra caution when approaching stops, crosswalks or intersections, as the majority of crashes occur at intersections.

"RCMP tend to see an increase in reports of both pedestrian and cyclist-involved collisions on all roadways," said Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey.

"These incidents are often a result of poor decisions and are entirely preventable."

He reminds pedestrians and cyclists to be cautious as well.

"Although pedestrians have the right of way at an intersection, they are reminded to ensure its safe to step off the curb before stepping onto the roadway. Cyclists are also reminded to obey the rules of the road, which includes obeying traffic control devices such as stop signs and traffic lights.

If residents have a traffic incident to report, they are encouraged to call Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Section at 250-980-5353.
