VIDEO: Officer involved in rough arrest reassigned to 'administrative duties'

(UPDATE: June 5 @ 9:40 am) - The officer involved in a rough arrest in downtown Kelowna over the weekend will not be patrolling the city's streets for the time being.

KelownaNow has received confirmation from the RCMP that the still unidentified officer will be doing office work for the foreseeable future.

"The officer involved in the arrest on May 30, 2020 which was captured on video, has been reassigned to administrative duties," S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet told KelownaNow.

"His duty status is subject to continuous review and assessment."

(Original story: June 4 @ 12:05 pm) - Another video has surfaced of a rough arrest in downtown Kelowna that currently has an RCMP officer under investigation.

The video, published by CBC Kelowna, shows another angle of the arrest and the officer in question arriving at the scene and getting involved in the altercation.

While it doesn’t show the incident as closely as the first video, the angle from the rooftop patio at Kelly O’Bryans allows us to see more of what unfolded.

We can now see that there are more punches thrown after the first flurry, as the original video gets cut off at that point by a passing vehicle.

The new footage shows a second flurry of punches, meaning the victim was struck at least 10 times by the officer while being brought to the ground.

Kelowna RCMP Supt. Brent Mundle spot to the incident at a press conference on Tuesday, saying that the officer’s actions were “concerning” and under review.

"He arrives, he makes a decision quite quickly, and that's the reason for examining the actions in this particular incident,” Mundle said.

The current status of the officer is unknown, but Mundle said it will be announced in the coming days.

KelownaNow received permission from CBC Kelowna to embed the video in this story.
