Tornado Alert Issued for Communities North of Calgary

A possible tornado alert has been issued for several Alberta communities as severe thunderstorms move into the area.

The communities north of Calgary affected by the critical alert include Sundre, Olds, Carstairs, and Cremona. At 6:10 p.m. Central Time, the Alberta Emergency Alert system issued the warning to residents as the tornado was spotted 10 kilometres north of Crossfield, moving east at 20 km/h.

According to the Alberta government, the storm is likely to produce tennis ball–sized hail and more tornadoes. Highway 2 from Calgary to Red Deer is directly along the path of the storm.

Residents are being told to prepare themselves to take shelter in a basement or reinforced structure if a tornado develops. Many people have taken to Twitter to post photos of the storm clouds as they pass over neighbourhoods. There are no reports of any injuries or damage as a result of the possible funnel clouds.
