Walmart Canada phase out of Visa credit cards begins

Walmart stores in Thunder Bay, Ont., will be the first to no longer accept Visa credit cards as the company rolls out its ban across the country.

The company announced it would be saying goodbye to Visa purchases back in June, with July 18 marking the first day of the changes. Walmart Canada claims that Visa credit card purchase fees are “unacceptably high” and will no longer accept the cards.

“Walmart’s purpose is to save customers money so they can live better. We are committed first and foremost to this purpose, which requires us to keep costs as low as possible,” said the company in a statement.

The Canada-wide changes will be rolled out in phases over the year, with Thunder Bay the first location to no longer accept the card. Walmart Canada says it pays over $100 million in fees to accept credit cards each and every year.

Customers will continue to be able to use other forms of payment including cash, Interac debit, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.
