Canadian women take rugby bronze in sport’s Olympic debut

It was a day of firsts for the Canadian women’s rugby team who fought for a medal on Monday in Rio.

Putting in a powerful first half helped the team take bronze against Great Britain in a match that ended 33-10.

Australia and New Zealand topped the podium in the first the rugby sevens tournament ever held at the Summer Olympics.

At the half, Canada led with a strong 26-5, a shock to the British side that had beaten the Canadians 22-0 on Sunday in group play.

For the tournament, Toronto-native Ghislaine Landry led the Canadian team in scoring with 41 points on five tries. Bianca Farella, of Montreal, had 30 points from six tries.
