A national campaign was officially launched by the Government of Canada on Saturday to encourage young women to enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Science Minister Kirsty Duncan announced the campaign on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day when people are encouraged to celebrate women's contributions to Science and support their continued engagement in the field.
"On this year's International Day of Women and Girls in Science, I want to encourage girls and young women to choose science—because choosing science helps to create a culture of curiosity,” said Duncan. “By asking questions and exploring all opportunities, our young women will be on a road to making discoveries that will change Canada and the world for the better."
The social media campaign and its accompanying website, which use the tagline “Choose Science,” aims to offer women greater opportunities to learn about the sciences.
The campaign also provides material, like home-based experimenters and citizen science projects, that teachers, mentors, and parents can use to support the women in their lives who are potentially interested in a future in research.
The United Nations first commemorated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th, 2016, with the aim to inspire a passion for science and technology among young women across the world.
