Foodies should be aware of a national recall for Evive Nutrition smoothies currently in effect.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Evive Nutrition Inc. is recalling its "Immunity Super Functional Smoothie" because it contains raw elderberries that may cause cyanide poisoning.
The product, which is sold online, were recalled after a number of customers complained. Numerous consumers have reported falling ill because of the product.
Though the body can process small amounts of cyanide, large amounts can cause poisoning and death. The agency says raw elderberries naturally contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can release cyanide after being consumed.
Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include anxiety, confusion, weakness, headaches, nausea, difficulty breathing, seizures and cardiac arrest.
Other Evive Nutrition products could be recalled later as the CFIA continues to investigate.
