Models, PI2010CA and PI901CA of Kidde dual-sensor (photoelectric and ionization) smoke alarms have been recalled due to an inability to detect smoke.

The presence of a yellow cap can cover of the two smoke sensors, compromising the alarms' smoke detection ability.

The recall is in effect for the two models manufactured between Sept. 10, 2016 and Oct. 13, 2017 and sold from Nov. 1, 2016 to Jan. 25, 2018.

If you have purchased this product, contact Kidde immediately to receive instructions on how to identify the presence of the yellow sensor cap.

Be sure to ask for a free replacement smoke alarm and only throw out the affected smoke alarm after a new one has been installed.

To identify the presence of the yellow sensor cap:

  • Remove the alarm from the wall to visually inspect.
  • Check the brand name and look for the model numbers: PI2010CA or PI901CA.
  • Locate the locking tab on the back of the alarm, turn the alarm on its side and look at the opening located closest to the locking tab.
  • If you can see a yellow cap in the opening, the unit is affected and must be replaced. Consumers are not to attempt to open the alarm and remove the yellow cap.
  • If there is no yellow cap, reinstall the smoke alarm.
