McMahon Stadium would be revamped if Calgary gets the Olympics

If Calgary is successful in a bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, it could mean new life for McMahon Stadium.

If the Olympics were to come to town, the more than 50-year-old stadium would be renovated and revamped.

At the top of the priority list would be making it more accessible to people with disabilities.

Other dramatic changes to McMahon Stadium, which was built in 1960, would be doubling its circulation area, adding new washrooms and a new concession area.

Work would cost more than $80 million, says Fergal Duff, director of venues, villages and capital infrastructure for the city’s Olympic and Paralympic bid corporation.

The stadium was used for the closing ceremonies at the 1988 Winter Olympics and would have the same purpose if Calgary ended up hosting again in 2026.

A non-binding vote will be held on Tuesday to find out whether citizens want the city to follow through with their bid at hosting the Olympics again.
