Netflix flip-flops and will now remove Lac-Megantic disaster footage from ‘Bird Box’

Footage of the 2013 Lac-Megantic disaster will officially be removed from the popular film Bird Box.

On Thursday, Netflix announced the decision months after initially refusing to remove footage of the train explosion.

“Netflix and the filmmakers of Bird Box have decided to replace the clip,” said Netflix in a statement.

“We’re sorry for any pain caused to the Lac-Megantic community.”

In January, people in the Quebec town and across the province were shocked after learning that footage from the train derailment that killed 47 people was used in the movie.

Demands that the brief scene be removed came from politicians at all levels, including Lac-Megantic Mayor Julie Morin.

Netflix initially apologized but refused to remove the footage, before finally agreeing to three months later.

However, most users of the streaming service have likely already seen the film, which smashed Netflix streaming records with more than 45-million streams in its first week.
