Netflix won’t remove Lac-Megantic footage from ‘Bird Box’

Netflix has rejected a request from Lac-Megantic, Que. mayor Julie Morin to remove footage of the town’s devastating explosion from its popular movie ‘Bird Box.’

Morin said she spoke with a Netflix representative today and asked the company to review its catalogue and remove the images.

Her request was declined, but she was assured that the streaming giant would work with its partners and ensure the footage wouldn’t be used in future productions.

Although it wasn’t the answer she wanted, Morin says she’s still satisfied that Netflix is sensitive to the recovery of her citizens, many of whom are suffering post-traumatic stress.

The rail explosion killed 47 people in the town in 2013.

It’s not just ‘Bird Box’ either, as the footage was also sold to another Netflix production called ‘Travelers.’

The company that sold the stock footage to ‘Travelers’ said it’s saddened that images of the tragedy were used for entertainment.

Pond5 added that the footage of the disaster was taken out of context and the company is contacting all customers who purchased similar footage to ensure they’re aware of the sensitivity of the content.
