A new Alberta driver will likely not be getting their full licence anytime soon after being busted for excessive speeding on Wednesday night.
According to Cst. Nick Luxen with the Calgary Police Service, the driver was caught going 181 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
That earned them a court date, which is the case for any driver caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 51 km/h, explained Luxen.
The penalty is then determined by the courts.
Last night the overnight low was -15 C. These winter driving conditions demand extra caution on our #yycroads. Our Traffic Section officers are continuing to see some extremely dangerous speeds. Luxen said it was -15°C at the time and the winter driving conditions demanded extra caution on the roads, which was clearly not displayed by this driver.
To make matters worse, it was a GDL driver, equivalent to having your N in BC, which means they will likely have quite the process ahead of them to eventually get a full licence.
“I’d assume he just graduated from having a licence, to no longer having one,” replied one Twitter user to Luxen’s post.
In Alberta, speeding tickets can net a fine up to $495 and a licence suspension depending on severity.
