Rock star Burton Cummings is petitioning against a local dance studio's loud music

Canadian icon Burton Cummings made a name for himself by playing some of the loudest rock n roll on earth as part of The Guess Who.

However, in an ironic twist of fate, the rock star has begun petitioning that a dance studio next to his residence in Moose Jaw turn down their music.

Kyra Klassen, who owns Dance Fitness With Kyra in downtown Moose Jaw, says the former lead singer for The Guess Who has been coming into classes to complain about the noise.

According to Klassen, Cummings has called police several times and even gone to city council to get a zoning bylaw changed.

“I’m trying to co-exist and operate and run a business while being next to him,” Klassen said Friday. “It’s kind of become an ongoing issue that’s escalated quickly.”

The studio has been open for nearly a year and has never been issued a ticket.

Klassen admits the windows are open most days while the studio plays loud music and participants celebrate following a tough workout.

The landlord has also conducted sound tests, which show a peak volume of 74 decibels — about the same sound as running a vacuum cleaner.

“The moods in my classes are said to be energetic and positive … and with being so concerned about the volume and ladies cheering or clapping when a song is done, that’s definitely changed,” Klassen said.

Despite the volume tests showing reasonable levels, Moose Jaw city council has become involved and a local petition has been started to have a city bylaw changed.

According to Klassen, the mayor as well as two city councillors have reached out to try and find a solution that works for both the fitness studio and the rocker.

A manager for Cummings declined to comment on the situation.
