7 great activities that you can do for free in the Okanagan

It’s a beautiful Saturday in the Okanagan and you have all kinds of free time to indulge in the wide range of fun activities that this region has to offer. Sure, you could hit up one of the 60-plus patios in Downtown Kelowna for some food and drink, or you could head to the mall to beat the heat and stock up on new goodies; unfortunately, we’re not all made of money. Sometimes you need to have some fun on a tight budget or even a non-existent budget!

Happily, the Okanagan is rich in free activities and entertainment. At every turn in this four-season playground you will find FREE hiking trails, FREE concerts in the park, and FREE adventure. What are you waiting for?

Observing the Wildlife

The surrounding mountains offer not only unbelievable views of the valley, they are also home to plenty of wildlife. Deer, coyotes, marmots, eagles, and more can be found roaming the Okanagan landscape, just waiting for you to grab your binoculars or camera for the ultimate sightseeing adventure. An ideal location for spotting wildlife is up in Wilden, where wildlife roams the terrain without disrupting the residents.

Make the Trek

It’s no secret that one of the greatest features of the Okanagan is the abundance of great hiking trails. After a busy day, sometimes all you want to do is kick back and listen to some great tunes. Better yet, listen to those tunes live, and for free! Festivals Kelowna has you covered on that front. All summer long, Parks Alive! by Festivals Kelowna hosts live concerts in outdoor venues around the city. The whole family is welcome to lay out in the park and take in the sweet sounds of local artists and world-class entertainers.

Geocaching: A Treasure Hunt for All Ages

Who doesn't love a good treasure hunt? Not only is geocaching a fun activity that you can do at no cost, but you also get something tangible out of it at the end. Using GPS-enabled devices, geocaching treasure hunters can locate hidden containers placed by previous geocachers, and then leave a new treasure in its place. X marks the spot on this free activity!

Kelowna Farmers' and Crafters' Market

The Kelowna Farmers' and Crafters' Market is a great place to take the family for free on a Wednesday or Saturday morning. You will likely find some gems around the market to spend your hard earned money on, but simply walking around the market is free! There are typically samples to be found as well, and some fun activities for the kids. Bonus: Supporting the Kelowna Farmers' and Crafters' Market means supporting the local community, and who doesn't love to support local?

Come on over and get your fresh veggies before they're gone! The weather is beautiful this Saturday at the Market, open until 1pm.

River Tubing

When you need a break from technology and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a float down the river is a great way to have a little fun and leave distractions behind. Sure it will cost a few dollars to buy a good floaty or inner tube, but once you have that, you are all set to take a relaxing and free ride with friends and family. The Enderby River and the Penticton Channel are prime spots for a good float, with easy and slow moving waterways.

Become a Beach Bunny

There is no shortage of great beaches in the Okanagan! Lining Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake, as well as some smaller bodies of water, are a variety of sandy spots to lay out and soak up the sun, enjoy a dip in the water, and play beach volleyball or Frisbee with other beach-goers.

Also, there are regular community events in Wilden where the development team invites the public to enjoy art, music and wine – and of course the stunning view from the Wilden Presentation Center. Right now, there is an exciting art exhibition in the Wilden Presentation Centre showing the work of three exceptionally talented UBC graduates. The exhibition will be open until July 5, 2016.
