7 Epic sunset spots in Kelowna

There’s something about sunsets that mesmerize and inspire us. No matter where you are in the world, most of us will take time to gaze out the window, pull the car over or even hike up a mountain just to watch the sun sink down into the horizon. So, why does something that occurs on a daily basis remain one of life’s greatest pleasures?

Maybe it’s the metaphoric turning of the page that attracts us, or the golden light that casts both a new light and perspective on our everyday scenery. Much like the glow of a campfire, the sunset serves as an almost meditative experience as one of the only instances in which we witness first hand the passing of time and it’s effect on nature.

Or, maybe we just like them because they're pretty.

No matter your reasoning, it’s a key part of our everyday experience as humans, and we want to encourage you to get out and make the most of every moment. Here are just some of the spots in our amazing Okanagan Valley to take pause and watch a spectacular sunset.

Knox Mountain Park

Knox Mountain is the perfect spot for the end of a busy day. It offers an amazing view of the sunset over the lake from almost everywhere in the park, and you can walk, run, bike or even drive up to the panoramic top lookout during the summer months. Enjoy the sunset with friends and fellow Kelownians, or head out to some of the more hidden corners of the mountain to find some solitude.

Mount Boucherie

If you’re up for a bit of a climb, Mount Boucherie in West Kelowna is a short, but steep, hike that’s well worth the grind. From the west facing view points you’ll catch the sun setting over the lake, and if you head to the peak you can check out just how beautiful Kelowna is in some golden light.

Okanagan Mountain Park

Okanagan Mountain Park is a whole 10,000 hectares of rugged landscape with mountain lakes, forests and open grasslands. More suited for a whole day adventure (unless you have a helicopter), this park has endless trails for the avid hiker or mountain biker.

From the air

Viewing a sunset from above the ground and the clouds is a truly spectacular experience. Cruising over the golden city, along the shoreline and up the lake is a sunset experience you won’t soon forget. Plus, it makes getting to the top of Okanagan Mountain Park or Rose Valley a whole lot easier!

Life can get really busy, and sometimes it’s hard to find the time to stop and smell the flowers, but taking a few moments everyday to connect with nature and watch a sunset is a great way to let go of some stress. If you’re looking for a little more of an adventure, Ikon Adventures is able to give you the thrill of seeing the valley from a bird’s eye view for the experience of a lifetime. With their heliport located just two minutes from downtown, they are easily accessible and offer a wide range of tours to get you up in the air for sunset.
