4 reasons to experience Skate Canada International

Summer may be on its way out, but there are plenty of things to look forward to in autumn! For the second time in 46 years, Skate Canada International is returning to Kelowna and it will be a spectacular event to witness.

This world-class competition features 60 of the world’s best figure skaters, representing 10 countries, competing to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Torino, Italy.

Because it’s not every day that world-class competition comes to Kelowna, here are four reasons you should experience the 2019 Skate International at Prospera Place on October 25 to 27, 2019.

Wholesome entertainment

Skate Canada International is an uplifting family event that you won’t want to miss. One where you and your children will see a level of athleticism and elegance on ice that they, and possibly you, have never seen in person.

Bring the entire family to marvel at the level of precision these athletes execute in their performance. If you have never witnessed professional figure skating, there’s no time like the present!

The line-up in Kelowna includes Canadian Champions Nam Nguyen (men), Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro (pairs). Attendees will get to see their favourite Canadian figure skaters in action on home ice.

World Champions (current and former) including Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia, Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of Russia, and Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the United States will also be in attendance.

For a weekend of exciting, family-friendly entertainment, come cheer for the best skaters in the world as they leap in the air executing graceful salchows, axels and more at Prospera Place.

Inspiring athletes

You never know when your children will be inspired to pick up a new sport — it could happen at any time. The Skate Canada International figure skating competition is a perfect opportunity for your kids to witness world figure skating champions in action. Perhaps you have a future figure skater in your midst!

Although this event showcases the best skaters competing in four disciplines (men’s, women’s, pair and ice dance), there are plenty for beginners to start from. At the Kelowna Skating Club, there are programs for tots, juniors and adults to get involved in figure skating.

Skate Canada International isn’t just for figure skaters who wish to learn and improve, this world-class event could give you a competitive edge in hockey as well. Watching their transitions, dexterity and precision may give you some ideas on how to improve your own skills on the ice.

After starting in hockey, Men’s Canadian Champion, Nam Nguyen, developed a love for figure skating. Watch this video below to learn more about your Canadian athlete.

For the sports fan

It’s no secret that Canadians love watching sports of all kinds. Last year, 1,488,500 Canadians tuned in to watch the 2018 Skate Canada International on CTV/TSN/RDS. But luckily, you can watch the world-class competition live at Prospera Place!

Sports fans can watch the final performance between the top-six men and women and the top-six pair and ice dance teams as they compete for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Torino, Italy from December 5 to 8, 2019.

For the fans of figure skating

The most obvious reason, the fan of figure skating!

They know the element of movement at Skate Canada International is the highest level of competition, they also want the best seat in the house. If that’s you, purchase tickets to see top figure skaters compete at the SCI.

Figure skating is mesmerizing, their abilities are dazzling and their passion for the sport will permeate throughout Prospera Place. Canadian Champion in pairs, Kirsten Moore-Towers, says it best “the perfect balance of athleticism and grace.”
