Special Olympics is a place where athletes of all abilities can find a supportive community and opportunities to excel at sport, and behind each athlete’s success is a dedicated team of volunteers.
Special Olympics BC Kelowna is actively seeking new volunteers to coach and volunteer in their Summer programs — whether you’re passionate about sports, fitness, or simply making a difference, your time can have a transformative impact.
Few people understand the difference that volunteers make as well as Shayla McLean, a longtime coach who has been volunteering with Special Olympics for over ten years. She began her journey with the Club Fit program, designed to promote general fitness and health, and has been a longtime coach for the swim team and volunteer in various other programs.
"Volunteering with Special Olympics has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life," says Shayla. "To see the progress, confidence, and joy these athletes experience—there’s really nothing else like it. Special Olympics is more than a sports organization; it’s a community, and being part of that community is such a privilege."
Volunteers at Special Olympics don’t just help run practices and games; they become mentors, role models, and cheerleaders. Coaches and volunteers work alongside athletes of all abilities, encouraging them to reach new heights, and providing a safe and inclusive environment where they can thrive.
“As a coach, you’re not just teaching a sport—you’re building confidence, resilience, and skills that carry over into every part of an athlete’s life,” Shayla explains. "You get to witness firsthand how something like swimming or fitness classes can boost someone’s self-esteem, help them feel part of a team, and for some reach the podium on a world stage."
With a growing number of athletes and programs, the need for volunteers is greater than ever. Roles range from coaching specific sports to assisting with practices, organizing events, and supporting logistics.
No experience is necessary—Special Olympics offers training and resources for all new volunteers. "Even if you don’t know much about a particular sport, what matters most is showing up and being present," says Shayla. "Special Olympics athletes are so grateful for the time you give, and you quickly see that even the smallest gestures make a huge difference."
Shayla’s time with Special Olympics has given her countless memorable moments, from athletes’ first successful swim strokes to their proud smiles at medal ceremonies.
She encourages anyone considering volunteering to give it a try. “You may come in thinking you’re there to help them, but you walk away realizing they’re teaching you just as much. I’ve learned so much from my athletes—about patience, determination, and the joy of every small victory.”
Community members who volunteer with Special Olympics don’t just enrich the lives of others; they gain a sense of purpose and fulfillment that only comes from giving back.
Whether you can give a few hours a month or a few hours a week, your support will empower athletes in our community and bring a unique joy to your own life.
For those interested in joining this vibrant community of volunteers, Special Olympics BC Kelowna invites you to reach out, learn more, and experience firsthand what it means to be part of something truly special.
As Shayla puts it, "If you’re looking for a way to make a real difference, there’s no better place than Special Olympics. You’ll be part of a team that lifts each other up—and together, we’re unstoppable."
