Get to know the family behind Summerland Animal Clinic

For 25 years, Summerland Animal Clinic has been a family operation, here to help your furry family!

Since the retirement of the original husband and wife team, this legacy has been passed along to a new husband and wife team: Dr. Rand Davis and Dr. Julie Woodward.

Dr. Davis and Dr. Woodward moved from Alberta to Summerland last year with their two young daughters, Golden Retriever/Collie mix Sophie and Pug/Cocker Spaniel mix Oscar.

They are excited to provide quality compassionate care to the pets of the Summerland community.

Dr. Rand Davis

Born and raised in Calgary, Rand attended veterinary school in Saskatoon and upon graduating, he relocated to begin practicing in a mixed animal practice in Strathmore, Alberta.

“I really enjoy all aspects of veterinary medicine, but I do have a particular passion for musculoskeletal health, specifically management of older arthritic patients,” said Rand. “I believe that one of the most common reasons for euthanasia of our older patients is comfort.”

Therefore, Rand truly believes in a multi-modal approach to keeping an animal as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.

“I am also passionate about orthopedic surgeries and IPHG has invested in a lot of surgical equipment to help bring those sorts of services to the clinic here in Summerland.”

Those surgeries include, but are not limited to:

  • Fracture repairs that help your companion recover comfortably. Pets can’t be relied on to rest their limb properly. Therefore, Rand and the team do everything they can to help with any bandaging to avoid complications.
  • Tibial-Plateau-Levelling Osteotomy, which is a surgery performed on dogs to stabilize the stifle joint after ruptures of the cranial cruciate ligament.
  • Cruciate repairs which involve changing the angle of the top of the shin bone by cutting the bone, rotating it and stabilizing it in a new position with a plate and screws.
  • Patellar Luxations, or trick knee, is a condition in which the kneecap dislocates or moves. A common condition in dogs, particularly small and miniature breeds, which usually becomes evident between the ages of four and six months.
  • Femoral Head Ostectomy, a surgical procedure that aims to restore pain-free mobility to a diseased or damaged hip by removing the head and neck of the femur (the long leg bone or thighbone).

Dr. Julie Woodward

Raised in her hometown of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Julie’s household had many dogs, cats and horses over the years, all of which were naturally part of her loving family.

Growing up with so many animals, she always had an appreciation of the human-animal bond and she wanted to become a veterinarian ever since she knew what a vet was.

Julie went on to attend the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, then subsequently moved to the Okanagan with her family.

Her goal with every patient visit is to do everything she can to ensure the best possible quality of life for that pet, so they can stay a happy, healthy family member for as long as possible.

When they took over the clinic last year, Dr. Woodward and Dr. Davis also joined the Interior Pet Health Group (IPHG), who have invested a tremendous amount of improvements in the clinic. IPHG added a new computer system, new in-house blood work, new digital radiology (X-ray) equipment.

Julie and Rand are also proud to have incorporated a lot of new surgical equipment, that will expand the surgical options so they can provide more to the families in and around Summerland.

They’re also building a developing bond with the local animal sanctuary, Critteraid, who provides care for animals in need of rescue.

If you need after-hours servicing, all of their hospitalized patients will be transferred to Fairfield in Kelowna for 24-hour monitoring so you can rest assured that your family is cared for.
