Your ultimate Okanagan and Kalamalka Lake activity guide

If you haven’t already visited the gorgeous lakes in the Vernon area, you’ve at least heard of them.

Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake are summer gems that every person should have a chance to enjoy for all it offers from the water sports to the beaches, and even more.

Here is your ultimate lake activity guide to having #TheBestDayEver at Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake thanks to Tourism Vernon!

Okanagan Lake

Okanagan Lake is the biggest lake in the Okanagan stretching all the way from Penticton to Vernon. Locals and tourists alike love it for all of the amazing activities and amenities available.

Whether it's boating, paddleboarding, finding epic viewpoints or casting a line, the options are limitless.

Out on the water

Instead of getting in the water, why not get on the water? Hop in your canoe, kayak or paddleboard and experience Okanagan Lake like you never have before. Navigate the deep waters from your device and take in some brand new sights.

Don’t own a flotation device? That’s not a problem! You can rent one from Ed's Mobile Kayak Rental, Okanagan Lake Life or Beach Life Boards. All three will deliver kayaks and paddleboards to where you want to paddle.

Hiking

If you prefer dry land and unparalleled views, the hiking trails are right up your alley. Vernon has no shortage of incredible hiking trails that overlook the picturesque views of Okanagan Lake.

The Okanagan Lake Lookout Trail loop within the Predator Ridge trail system is a moderate 3.2 km loop that usually takes less than an hour to complete on foot. The 360-degree views offered from this trail are unmatched.

Head down to Ellison Provincial Park where there are some short and sweet hikes around the beaches and get some excellent vantage points of Okanagan Lake. Check out the Nature Trail, a 1.4 km loop near the campground, for exquisite lake views and a tranquil forest.

Learn to fish

Do the kids want to try something new? Check out the free Learn to Fish Program offered by The Freshwater Fisheries Society. It’s a fun and hands-on way for youth to learn basic angling skills.

Kalamalka Lake

Kalamalka Lake (also known as Kal Lake by locals) is famous for its tropical turquoise green waters that change colour throughout the year. The eye-catching lake is a local hotspot during the summer for everyone, and for good reason.

This stunning lake is the perfect place to set up for an unforgettable day in the sun and has numerous boat launches for a great day on the water.

Beach Days

If relaxing on the sandy shores of Kal Lake with your favourite people, sipping drinks and getting a tan sounds like your favourite afternoon activity, you’re definitely going to love the beaches along this dazzling lake.

Kal Beach, Jade/Juniper Bay Beach, Pumphouse Beach and the shoreline at Kekuli Bay Provincial Park are a few of the best beaches you can enjoy.

Pack a picnic basket with your lunch, a cooler with your favourite brews and bring along a floatie for a delightful day on the beach with your pals.

Paddleboarding

Head on over to Kalavida Surf Shop and rent a paddleboard for a few hours. You can go on an adventure to burn some energy or relax out on the glittering waters and get a tan.

If you don’t know how to paddleboard or want your children to learn, the surf shop offers lessons as well. Try something new out on one of British Columbia’s most enchanting lakes.

Okanagan Rail Trail

Whether you want to hike, bike or go for a leisurely walk along the lake, the Okanagan Rail Trail is the perfect place to do it!

The trail, which has been developed over the last several years, was built on the old infrastructure of the discontinued CN rail corridor.

It’s wide enough to fit the family, to ride your bike side by side or walk together and take in all of the surrounding beauty of the Okanagan. It’s also kept in good condition so it's safe for younger family members to use.
