A passion for content, film, or writing can flourish into a career that is both fulfilling and rewarding. But gaining the skills and experience necessary to pursue that career can be challenging. Luckily, there are programs like TELUS STORYHIVE’s Summer Crew 2.0, designed with the sole purpose of supporting you on your journey.

What is TELUS STORYHIVE’s Summer Crew 2.0?

Summer Crew is an opportunity for aspiring creatives to gain experience in livestreaming, develop interview skills, and learn how to drive their online presence.

This unique 14-week summer program enlists 14 crews from different regions across B.C. and Alberta to livestream their community. They provide microgrants, equipment and training to kickstart their livestreaming and content creation journey. Each crew consists of two teammates, so you can apply with a co-creator/friend or apply on your own and you’ll be paired up.

Throughout the program, crews will create editorial calendars, track their expenses and produce two hours of local, G-rated content weekly. STORYHIVE provides crews with robust video editing software and access to a portal from which they can edit their content. Weekly content will also be broadcasted to a large audience on TELUS Optik TV and STORYHIVE’s online platforms.

Whether you’re an aspiring livestreamer, budding historian or storyteller that loves your community, this program is for you. No experience is required to apply!

Pursue your passion

Since 2013, STORYHIVE has been able to help empower a community of thousands of local content creators across B.C. and Alberta, providing over $52 million in production funding and creating a safe space for storytellers to hone their skills and bring the projects they care about to life— and you could be one of them.

"For me personally I overcame this odd voice in my head that told me ‘I should never be on camera," says Gabby Moukhaiber, 2022 Summer Crew alumnus.

Gabby and his crewmate, Rekha Kapadia, took advantage of the opportunity to “experience being out of our comfort zone,” with each of them taking on roles they had little experience in.

Gabby, who had started his own video and content creation company, came into the program with experience being behind the camera. Over the summer he developed confidence in being on camera, conducting interviews, and sharing his voice.

Summer Crew 2.0 is the perfect environment to pursue your passion, and expand your understanding of the journalism and broadcasting industry.

Keil Hunka joined the program as an illustrator and graphic designer, who also had an interest in film. Access to Summer Crew's resources and equipment allowed them to find a new passion in video production.

“Video was always something I wanted to break into but didn’t know how, so this felt like the perfect opportunity,” explains Hunka, “the Summer Crew program really made it accessible to learn the industry and the techniques behind making quality content.”

Elevate community voices

STORYHIVE wants to support your content creation journey so you can support the voices of your community!

This opportunity gives you a platform to create content that makes an impact and “offer coverage to people or businesses that otherwise may haven’t had the chance to spread word about what they do,” adds Hunka.

Last year's alumni, Raquelle Roodenburg and Kristina Lao, ran a podcast prior to entering the program, interviewing over 60 individuals. But they were interested in the prospect of improving their process and taking on a challenge.

Along with crushing those goals, they found a love for community.

Summer Crew gave them the confidence and tools to make new relationships and showcase parts of their community that they felt needed to be shared, “there are amazing people right around every corner, doing incredible things, and we loved getting to know every one of them,” concludes Raquelle.
