When your home is located in a wildfire-prone area, it can be scary when the fire season rolls around.
But you can have peace of mind that your property, home and belongings are as safe as possible during the summertime through the FireSmart Program!
If you haven’t heard of the FireSmart Program before, it is a home assessment completed by a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist who identifies wildfire hazards on a property.
It’s provided by the City of Penticton and Penticton Fire Department. The best part is, it’s completely free for residents to access.
The FireSmart Home Assessments provide property-specific recommendations on the best ways to mitigate wildfires and advise residents on the steps they can take to reduce their risk of wildfires.
Employees from the program can also further help residents with fire mitigation tasks in preparation for the fire season.
Penticton has hot and dry summers as well as open grass and Pondarosa Pine fuel types which certainly pose a risk. Wildfires affect Penticton and the surrounding region annually, marking the importance of taking action.
Now that the weather beginning to heat up, there is no better time to start being proactive and prepared rather than reacting when an active wildfire is getting too close for comfort.
It’s the second year of offering these comprehensive assessments and over 100 properties were surveyed in 2021.
The City of Penticton encourages homeowners and property owners to fill out an application for a FireSmart Home Assessment.
