You could win a dream home by supporting the community with Lake Life Lottery

There are only 20 days left to get your tickets for a chance to win Lake Life Lottery’s Grand Prize – a $1.75 million Dream Home by Lake Okanagan!

Every dollar raised by Lake Life Lottery goes towards making physical, mental and social wellness resources more accessible than ever through the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation and YMCA of Southern Interior BC.

The Kelowna General Hospital Foundation ensures we have world-class healthcare here at home, and YMCA of Southern Interior BC supports whole person wellbeing with programs and opportunities to help community members thrive.

Barb Leclair’s story

Thousands of people across the Interior of BC are in need of urgent or specialized medical care every day, and Barb Leclair gives sincere thanks to the Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) and YMCA for helping her to “survive, recover and rebuild.”

In July 2016, Barb Leclair got into a motorcycle accident and was rushed to KGH. She underwent several surgeries for a fractured arm and wrist, as well as a broken pelvis.

“I was a challenging patient, as I was not to walk for an extended period of time. The specialized equipment, lifts and chairs that I was able to access at KGH allowed me to remain in Kelowna, near the people I loved most and who loved me most.”

Those closest to Leclair call her “Barb 2.0” because she’s “essentially a rebuild!”

Leclair returned home at the end of September and soon began a program set up for her by her kinesiologist in the kiddie pool at the Kelowna Family Y. She graduated from the kiddie pool to the lane pool, and then went on to aqua fit classes in the deep pool.

“The YMCA is truly a welcoming facility, demonstrating an inclusive and accessible environment,” she explains. “I felt comfortable and was able to be quite vulnerable in front of others there.”

She has stayed consistent with her rehabilitation at the Y, which she credits to the facility and staff for assisting her throughout her healing journey orthopaedically, neurologically and emotionally.

“The Y gave me the tools and equipment I needed to strengthen and rebuild my body and mind after such a life changing experience. In fact, I was able to return to work as a secondary school vice principal for one and a half years, and have since retired.”

Although Leclair still has to manage her pain on a daily basis, she has a functional right arm and can write with her right hand again – she can also play an adapted golf game!

“I have the deepest respect for both KGH and the YMCA. I am living proof that both institutions can make a profound difference in someone’s life and eventual future.”
