80% of Canadians are scared of a Trump presidency: poll

As the United States presidential campaign heads into its final week, the number of Canadians who think Donald Trump as president would be detrimental to Canada has peaked.

According to a new Canada-wide Insights West poll, 80 per cent of Canadians believe it would be “bad” for Canada if Trump were to win the election. This is the highest level reported since they began tracking this number over a year ago.

Out of anyone, residents of British Columbia have the most negative view of Trump, at nearly 90 cer cent.

In comparison, one third of Canadians, at 34 per cent, believe a U.S. presidency headed by Hillary Clinton would be “bad” for Canada, while 42 per cent say it will be “good” for the country.

Nearly 70 per cent of Canadians have seen, read or heard media stories where American election candidates discussed their positions on issues, and about 60 per cent watched a debate featuring the American presidential nominees.

“The level of engagement of Canadians during this year’s presidential campaign in the United States has been extraordinary,” said Mario Canseco from Insights West. “This is one of the reasons for the low number of Canadians who hold no opinion on either of the two main presidential nominees.”

More than half of Canadians, at 58 per cent, think that if Trump were to win the election the Canadian Government should welcome Americans who want to move to Canada. Over 30 per cent think Canada should sever diplomatic ties with the U.S. if that is the case.

Over three quarters of Canadians think a victory by Clinton will be a historic milestone for women in the world, while many would like to see Michelle Obama run for President of the United States one day.
