22 dead, 59 injured after terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester

A night of music quickly turned into a horrific scene in Manchester, England on Monday night.

As a large crowd filed out of Manchester Arena around 10:35 p.m. local time, an explosion was heard, sending people scurrying for safety.

In total, 22 people were killed and 59 people were injured and are now being treated at eight hospitals across Greater Manchester.

Manchester police say that there was a single attacker who died at the scene.

“We have been treating this as a terrorist incident and we believe, at this stage, the attack last night was conducted by one man,” said a police statement. “We believe the attacker was carrying an improvised explosive device, which he detonated causing this atrocity.”

The investigation into this attack is ongoing and will likely continue for some time, but police have confirmed that children are amongst the dead.

Lancashire County Council confirmed that eight-year-old Saffie Roussos was killed in the attack.

“This has been the most horrific incident we have had to face in Greater Manchester and one that we all hoped we would never see,” said Chief Constable Ian Hopkins.

Police have executed a pair of search warrants since the attack and one arrest has been made

Ariana Grande tweeted about the incident as well, saying that she was broken and sorry from the bottom of her heart.
