Toronto-bound plane with dozens of Canadians on board crashes shortly after takeoff

A plane carrying dozens of Canadians flirted with disaster this morning.

The Fly Jamaica Airways jet took off from Guyana around 2:10 a.m. local time with 118 people, along with two infants, and eight crew members on board.

Just 11 minutes later, the pilot indicated a hydraulic problem and requested permission to return to the airport.

According to St. Lucia News, the plane attempted to get back to the airport, but it overran the runway and crash-landed.

The airline said in a statement this morning that it believes all 128 people on board were safe following the crash.

St. Lucia News also there were 82 Canadians on board the flight, which was Toronto-bound.

The same source also reported that a total of six people were hurt in the crash, but are stable and being treated at the Diamond Regional Hospital in Georgetown.
