10 things you didn't know about Snowbombing

It might be chilly, but Snowbombing promises to be lit.

Sun Peaks is gearing up to host thousands for Snowbombing’s Canadian debut April 6th to April 10th.

Breaking from the festival norm of 30-degree temperatures and tent cities, Snowbombing is Europe’s largest snow and electronic music festival and it’s making its foray into North America.

Five thousand festivalgoers are expected at the four-day apres-ski style event. Four main stages will feature upwards of 70 live acts, including Kaskade, Bob Moses, Oliver Heldens and Duke Demont, with Ludacris headlining on Sunday night. Single tickets and shuttle passes from Kamloops up to Sun Peaks are available.

CJ’s Nightclub is the official after party spot on Friday April 7th and Saturday April 8th and entry is free with a festival wristband.

Snowbombing Canada coincides with its famous Austrian counterpart and organizers promised to “bottle the unbeatable magic of Mayrhofen and splash it across the majesty of the Canadian mountains.”

Canadians are about to get a taste of what punch one of Europe’s most popular festivals packs. So what can we expect? They call it “the biggest show on snow” and here’s to hoping it lives up to its reputation.

1) Snowbombing started as a club night at a remote resort in the French Alps and has been going strong for 18 years. It relocated to Mayrhofen in 2005.

2) Snowbombing is known for its unique venues perhaps because they’ve taken the challenge of turning the coldest season into the hottest dance party. Its Arctic Disco is an actual igloo complete with two dance areas and three bars sculpted entirely from ice. At Sun Peaks, they are transforming a parking garage into a “super club” dubbed The Underground. You won’t see that at Pemberton.

3) It’s not just about the music. Snowbombing reportedly also has a “whimsical” side, with different plays on traditional Austrian culture (at Sun Peaks they will be pitting the plaid of a lumberjack against lederhosen during a series of games at the Street Party). Other side events include its table tennis tournament and daily snow yoga. It also promises world class ski and snowboard competitions.

4) Snowbombing Canada is shuttling festivalgoers in to Sun Peaks from Vancouver and Kelowna but, in Europe, a parade of 150 vehicles takes an epic road trip into Mayrhofen. The official Snowbombing road trip/car rally covers four countries in two days on the way to the festival. There are themes, costumes, shenanigans, flags, pit-stop parties and a grand procession into Mayrhofen. This year’s theme is Hans Von Hofen’s Freakadelic Circus and the trip leaves its UK hub on April 1.

5) Snowbombing hosts some of the biggest names in electronic music. Past acts include: Example, Dizzee Rascal, Pendulum, The Prodigy, Rudimental, Kasabian, Sub Focus, Skrillex and Fatboy Slim.

6) Organizers said they chose Sun Peaks to be the Canadian host partly because of similarities it shares with the European venue in the Tyrollean Alps. “Strangely it looks just like our Austrian home,” said Gareth Cooper, CEO of Broadwick Live.

7) Snowbombing was named Best Small Festival at the European Festival Awards in 2016 and Best Overseas Festival at the UK Festival Awards in 2010, an award for which the festival has also been shortlisted for several other times, including in 2016.

8) Global Entertainment, the company that owns Snowbombing producer Broadwick Live, also owns 11 other festivals: Victorious Festival, Festival No. 6, Rewind Festival, South West Four, Field Day, Boardmasters, Y Not, Truck, Transition, Hideout and Electric Elephant. It is reportedly looking to grow its roster in the Canadian market.

9) You might have been on a blind date, but you've never seen speed dating like this. Snowbombing takes the traditional matchmaking game and puts it in the air — on a chairlift, to be exact. There's really no getting out of this if the first impression is sour but maybe you'll meet the love of your life or, at least, your partner in crime for the week.

10) Snowbombing Canada is rigging Sun Peaks with 24 portable lighting towers, more than 100 automated stage lights, 96,000 square feet of plywood to cover grass areas, 250 operations staff members and 26 tent structures. There will be 10 licensed areas on site.
