It’ll be created as an Amazon Prime original and the initial commitment is for multiple seasons of the show.
The series will be a prequel to the trilogy of movies and the deal signed with Amazon includes the potential for an additional spin-off series.
“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series at Amazon Studios.
“We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
A cast and timeline for the series has yet to be announced.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy of movies earned a combined gross of nearly $6 billion worldwide.
Directed by Peter Jackson, they garnered a combined 17 Academy Awards, including Best Picture for the final installment of the trilogy, The Return of the King.
