Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting

Daniel Day-Lewis, who many call the best actor of his generation, is retiring from the film industry.

The news was reported by Variety on Tuesday afternoon, citing a private statement from Day-Lewis.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” the statement reads. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.”

Fans of Day-Lewis and the movie world in general were left with plenty of questions, but it’s unlikely there will be any answers soon.

“This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

The 60-year-old has played a wide variety of roles throughout his career.

His work has been acknowledged with three best actor Oscars for “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007) and “Lincoln” (2012).

He also earned a pair of best actor nominations on top of the three victories, which were for “In the Name of the Father” (1993) and “Gangs of New York” (2002).

Other notable films from Day-Lewis include The Last of the Mohicans” (1992), “The Age of Innocence” (1993), “The Boxer” (1997) and “The Ballad of Jack and Rose” (2005).

His final film, "Phantom Thread," is scheduled to come out on Christmas Day this year.
