‘Serious safety breach’: Big White’s avalanche safety team issues public warning

A pair of work stoppages on Sunday has the avalanche safety team at Big White Ski Resort issuing a warning to the public.

According to the resort, the team encountered a “serious safety breach” while working in the Parachute Bowl and had to delay operations twice to ensure the terrain was clear of people.

The first stoppage came after the team spotted ski tracks leading into the lower bowl.

They had to halt work once again when a group of individuals allegedly disregarded rope lines and entered the bowl during active blasting.

“Let us be clear: Our rope lines and avalanche boundaries exist for your safety and ours,” explained a statement from Big White Ski Resort on social media.

“These closures ensure our teams can work efficiently and safely to open terrain as soon as possible. Ignoring them puts everyone at risk.”

The statement says that a reckless decision “could have cost lives” and 100% compliance with avalanche closures is “non-negotiable.”

It adds that ducking avalanche closures will result in an immediate pass suspension.

“We want every guest and team member to return home safely,” the statement noted. “Please respect all signage, closures and boundary lines.”
