Local dentists encourage check ups during oral health month

Your smile is one of the first things people see and can make a lasting impression.

April is Oral Health Month, which means local dental health professionals are reminding people that oral health is a strong indicator of a person's overall health and is just as important to be checked regularly.

"Sometimes people end up waiting until something in the mouth is actually sore and that's when the issue can really be something bad, that may require a lot of treatment like having teeth extracted or root canals," said Dr. Brent Corlazzoli from Landmark Dental Centre.

When you have good oral health, not only are there positive effects on your overall health, but there is an increase in your confidence, self-esteem, and drive socially and professionally.

However, when a person's oral health is poor, their quality of life is directly impacted. Oral discomfort, missing or broken teeth, or oral infection may influence the ways one speaks, eats and socializes.

"Oral cancer is becoming more prevalent, it's now the sixth most prevalent cancer, even higher than cervical cancer and it's unfortunately just not talked about enough." said Dr. Corlazzoli.

Luckily, Kelowna's dental health professionals are here to help.

Not only is it important to ensure a diligent at-home oral hygiene routine, but it is just as integral to keep up with regular visits to your dentist and their team of professionals, trained and experienced in keeping your smile healthy and detecting the early signs of oral cancer, among other health concerns.
