Dog food voluntary recall expanded for elevated levels of vitamin D

A voluntary recall which targeted select food products from an American dog food brand for elevated levels of Vitamin D has been expanded.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is expanding their voluntary recall of certain canned dog food products to harmful levels of vitamin D in their mixture.

The food brand released a preliminary voluntary recall in January due to the same vitamin premix concerns.

Hill’s explains that although vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, “ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues.”

“Dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss.”

In large concentrations, Vitamin D can lead to serious health conditions including renal dysfunction.

No dry foods, cat foods, or treats have been affected and are not included in the recall.

Pet owners whose dogs who have consumed any of the products listed below and are exhibiting symptoms are being advised to contact a veterinarian.
