5 things you need to know this morning: Jan. 20, 2020

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Malaysia sending back 150 containers of illegally imported trash

They say it’s not about the money, it’s about dignity. Malaysia will be shipping out 150 containers of trash that was illegally imported into the country. It comes from countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and France and has led to Malaysia’s environment minister saying her country won’t be used as the world’s dump.

2. The Super Bowl matchup is set

We started the season with 32 teams and now we’re down to two. It’ll be the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs battling it out in Miami in two weeks. One of the teams will be leaving Florida with the Lombardi Trophy and the title of Super Bowl 54 champions. It should be a fantastic game between two great teams, but it won’t take much to beat last year’s snoozer of a game.

3. Massive dust storm rolls through drought-stricken Australian city

As if Australia wasn’t dealing with enough weather-related heartbreak, the city of Dubbo had more on their plate on Sunday. A huge dust storm rolled through the city, which turned out the lights for a few minutes. On the bright side, some parts of the country that have been worst-affected by bushfires did see a bit of rain over the weekend.

4. Ontario elementary teachers begin week of rotating one-day strikes

Many elementary students in Ontario will be getting a day off this week as Ontario teachers have begun a week of rotating one-day strikes. It begins today with teachers in the Ottawa-Carleton, Toronto and York regions locking up the classrooms and instead spending their day outside picketing.

5. Conor McGregor returns with a quick and convincing victory

It was a hyped up fight and it certainly delivered, at least when it comes to entertainment value. Conor McGregor needed just 40 seconds to beat up on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the final fight of UFC 246 on Saturday. It was a convincing return for McGregor, who hadn’t fought in the Octagon since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018.
