A heatwave continues to break records in various parts of Europe. On Wednesday, a part of Germany hit 40.5°C to break the country’s overall temperature record, which was previously set in 2015. Both Paris and London also set new city records on Wednesday at 40.6°C and 36.9°C respectively.

Inventor Franky Zapata tried to cross the English Channel this morning, but it wasn’t in your typical fashion. He tried to do it on a jet-powered hoverboard. Unfortunately, he failed the attempt after falling into the channel while trying to refuel. Although he was visibly disappointed after the unsuccessful attempt, he was unhurt.

Some strange roster moves from Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash led to confusion and protest on Wednesday. Cash shifted a pitcher to first base, brought in another pitcher for one batter and then moved the original pitcher back to the mound. The confusion delayed the game for 20 minutes and the Boston Red Sox ended up playing the game under protest.

Dutch actor Rutger Hauer has died at the age of 75. His agent confirmed the news on Wednesday, saying that Hauer died at home in the Netherlands on July 19 following a brief battle with an undisclosed illness. Hauer starred in many films over his career including Blade Runner, Ladyhawke, Batman Begins and Sin City.

A Russian oil tanker has been detained by Ukraine’s security service. Authorities have searched the vessel, seized communication records and interviewed the crew. The ship’s owner reported that the crew was then safely returned home, but that wasn’t verified by the Russian Embassy in Kiev.
