1. Malawi’s vice president one of 10 killed in plane crash

Officials have confirmed that Malawi’s vice president, Saulos Chilima, was one of 10 people killed in a plane crash on Monday. The president said the small military plane crashed in a mountainous region in the north of the African country.

2. BC wildfire season off to slow start, except in the northeast

A few weeks ago, it looked like British Columbia was in for an early and catastrophic wildfire season. Although it’s only June, most of the province is off to a “quiet” start to fire season with the exception of BC’s northeast. While fewer wildfires have started this year compared to 2023, officials note that it’s unclear what the summer will bring.

3. California socialite gets 15 years to life for fatal hit-and-run in 2020

Rebecca Grossman, a Southern California socialite who’s the wife of a prominent LA doctor, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. She struck and killed brothers Mark and Jacob Iskander, ages 11 and 8, while speeding in her vehicle in 2020.

4. Ottawa has a new ‘Night Mayor’

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe introduced Mathieu Grondin as the city’s new “Night Mayor” on Tuesday. He’ll be in charge of helping shape Ottawa’s nightlife and shaking off the Canadian capital city’s image as a no-fun town.

5. Apple holds event to introduce first generative AI features

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, Apple unveiled the first batch of tools powered by “Apple Intelligence.” The introduction of Apple’s first generative AI features for the iPhone, iPad and Mac, marks an exciting new era for the company.
