1. Dozens killed in Thai pre-school massacre

Dozens of people – most of them children – have been killed at a pre-school daycare in Thailand. Police said the suspect was a former officer who was fired in June for drug use.

2. Mayor assassinated in Mexico

The mayor of a Mexican town has been assassinated in a mass shooting, police have said. At least 17 other people were killed alongside Mayor Conrado Mendoza Almeda.

3. Hong Kong to give away 500,000 plane tickets

Hong Kong has pledged to give away 500,000 plane tickets in a bit to boost its tourist industry. It comes as the famous city attempts to return to pre-COVID-19 levels of tourism.

4. WHO issues global alert after cough syrups linked to death of children

The World Health Organization has issued a global alert after four cough syrup products were linked to the deaths of 66 children. The syrups, made in India by Maiden Pharmaceuticals, could be responsible for acute kidney injuries, the WHO said.

5. UK could face blackouts this winter, grid manager warns

The UK could experience blackouts during peak usage hours this winter if gas supplies run low, the firm that manages the country's power grid has said. It comes as a consequence of Britain's heavy reliance on foreign gas supplies, which are now limited due to the fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war.
