One man was sent to hospital in life-threatening condition after an incident at an eating contest at a well-known Calgary pub. Paramedics were called to the Ship and Anchor pub around 6 pm Saturday and were told there was an Oktoberfest-themed eating contest going on. They were not able to determine if that’s what led to the medical incident, but attendees said the contest involved eating bratwurst on a bun.

After nearly five months, it appears as though the Writers Guild of America and Hollywood studios have reached a tentative agreement to end the historic screenwriters strike. However, no deal is in the works yet for striking actors. The three-year contract agreement must be approved by the guild’s board and members before the strike officially ends.

Matteo Messina Denaro, the convicted mastermind behind some of the Sicilian Mafia’s most heinous slayings, died in a hospital prison ward on Monday. Doctors said he had been in a coma since Friday. The 61-year-old had been on the run for decades before his need for colon cancer treatment led to his capture in January 2023. His cause of death is suspected to be from his illness, but an autopsy still needs to be performed.

Florida officials have humanely killed a nearly 14-foot alligator that was recently spotted with a body in its mouth. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim of the gator as 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham. While alligators have been spotted in that area before, one resident said she had never seen one that large.

Barriers were broken down Saturday as Haley Van Voorhis took the field for NCAA Div III Shenandoah University. The junior became the first woman to appear in an NCAA football game at a position other than kicker. She made an impact as well, registering a quarterback hurry in the first quarter of the team’s win, forcing an incomplete pass.
