Canadian woman knifed and American man killed on Appalachian Trail

A Canadian woman has been stabbed and an American man killed while hiking on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia.

The woman, who is from Nova Scotia, played dead until her knife-wielding attacker left the scene, police said.

James Jordan from West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, has been charged with murder and assault with intent to commit murder.

Wythe County Chief Deputy Charles Foster said Ronald Sanchez Jr., 43, was found dead early on Saturday morning.

His body was about 90 metres from where Jordan was arrested.

Foster said he did not know the name of the woman from Nova Scotia.

He added that she called 911 to say that she had been beaten and stabbed, and had played dead until her attacker left.

Foster said the injured woman had to run for about six miles before she found someone to help her.

The FBI has taken over the case, but so far has not released the woman’s name.
