Jennifer Lawrence fires back at 'utterly ridiculous' criticism of her 'sexist' dress

Leave it to social media to create unnecessary controversy.

That’s exactly what happened after actress Jennifer Lawrence wore a revealing dress to an outdoor promo event in London for her new movie Red Sparrow.

Lawrence was criticized for not wearing appropriate clothing for the weather, especially compared to her bundled up male co-stars.

“This is such a quietly depressing (and revealing) image,” tweeted Helen Lewis, editor of a publication called New Statesman. “Not least because I’ve been outside today and it’s bloody freezing.”

Others echoed Lewis’ thoughts on social media, chiming in with comments like, “for those of you dreaming of a career in show biz,” and, “did the topic of a coat ever come up?”

On Wednesday, Lawrence published a spirited Facebook post in which she slams the critics for thinking that she didn’t wear the outfit by choice.

“This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended,” she wrote. “That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf?”

“I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.”

She continued on to say that criticizing her for wearing the dress in cold weather is not only sexist and ridiculous, but it’s “not feminism.”

“Overreacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward,” Lawrence ranted.

“It’s creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold, that’s my choice too!”

Red Sparrow comes out on March 1 and stars Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Francis Lawrence, Jeremy Irons, Mary-Louise Parker and Charlotte Rampling alongside Lawrence.
