Royal Winnipeg Ballet School holding auditions in Kelowna next month

If you or your child are interested in a career in dance, you have a chance to audition for one of the world’s premier ballet companies next month.

From Oct. 16 until Jan. 26, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School Professional Division is touring North America, searching for new talent.

The first stop on that tour is Kelowna on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Auditions are the first step for dancers hoping to join one of the school’s three full-time professional programs.

Those programs are Ballet Academic (grade five and up), Aspirant (post-secondary) and teacher training (post-secondary).

“The audition tour is an amazing opportunity to witness the incredible work that teachers of dance are doing across the country,” said Stéphane Léonard, RWB School interim director.

“We want to honour their amazing work and help their pupils reach their highest potential.”

Léonard says the tour isn’t just about auditions, but is a wonderful chance to connect with dance communities across Canada and the United States.

Auditions will include a question and answer session, as well as a master class in some cities.

If you can’t attend an audition, you can submit a video application online until May 1, 2020.

Students who make the cut after the first audition will be invited to attend summer session, which acts as phase two of the audition process.

It’ll run throughout July 2020 in Winnipeg and it allows potential students to experience life at the RWB first hand.

Students deemed to be fit for one of the RWB School’s prgrams after that July session will be accepted into regular session, which runs from September 2020 to June 2021.

Currently, 70% of the RWB Company’s dancers are graduates from the school and more than half of the school’s leadership being alumni as well.
