One woman is dead following a head-on highway crash in the Kootenays on Tuesday night.
Emergency crews responded to the fatal crash on Hwy 93/3, around 15 kilometres east of Cranbrook, around 6 pm.
The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says a white 2015 Dodge pickup truck with Alberta plates hit a Pontiac Vibe head-on as it attempted to pass a semi on the highway.
Sadly, the 62-year-old Wardner woman behind the wheel of the Pontiac did not survive the collision. The driver and one passenger from the Dodge, both males, were hospitalized with minor injuries.
“While the cause of this collision is still under investigation, we are urging drivers to slow down, drive sober and drive without distractions,” said Insp. Chad Badry, BCHP.
The highway is open again after a lengthy closure to allow first responders to complete their work and investigators to preserve evidence.
The BCHP is now turning to the public in hopes of advancing the probe into this fatal crash.
Anyone who saw the driving behaviour of the Dodge leading up to the crash, witnessed the collision or has relevant dash cam footage from the area is urged to contact BCHP Cranbrook at 250-420-4244.
