BC man fined $7K, receives hunting ban after illegally killing caribou and moose

A Fernie man pleaded guilty in provincial court last week to multiple Wildlife Act violations.

He was convicted of possessing a carcass without parts attached and obstructing officers, which earned him a $7,000 fine and a two-year hunting suspension.

The caribou and moose that he illegally killed were also forfeited to the Crown.

The ruling, which came down on Thursday, Sept. 10, came nearly a year after the investigation began.

Conservation officers and the RCMP air service were conducting hunter checks at remote fly-in lakes northwest of Dease Lake when they became suspicious of a bull caribou and bull moose killed by one of the hunters in a camp.

“The subsequent investigation by conservation officers in Atlin, Dease Lake and Fernie determined that both animals were illegally killed,” said a Facebook post from the BC Conservation Officer Service.

“Officers were deliberately hindered during the investigation by the hunter.”

Over 90% of the fine was ordered to be paid to the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund.
