Crash between truck and semi on Hwy 6 east of Nakusp claims 4 lives

Four people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash near Nakusp late last week.

Police were called to the scene of the collision, on Hwy 6 around 30 kilometres east of Nakusp, shortly before 6 pm on Friday.

An investigation indicated that a passenger truck crossed the centre line of the highway and drove into the path of a semi that was towing a trailer full of timber.

According to an RCMP release, the semi driver tried to avoid the collision, but his B-trailer hit the ditch and caused the entire rig to flip over.

The force of the impact scattered the 100,000-pound load of timber across the highway and into the truck.

Cpl. James Grandy said all of the occupants of the truck, who were from Nelson, died in the collision.

According to the Canadian Press, there were four people inside the vehicle that lost their lives.

The semi driver was sent to hospital with minor injuries after being rescued from the flipped rig by witnesses at the scene.

“Emergency responders worked to extinguish the flames, but the truck and its trailer were destroyed by the fire,” the RCMP release noted.

The fatal crash shut down Hwy 6 until early Saturday morning as investigators probed the scene and emergency crews cleared debris.

Both the BC Coroners Service and Slocan Lake RCMP continue to investigate the incident.

The RCMP has reached out to NowMedia and requested the following addition to the story:
