Hwy 1 Illecillewaet project, east of Revelstoke, successfully completed

Although much of the western sections of Highway 1 remain impacted by mudslides and flooding, the Illecillewaet project, located 42 kilometres east of Revelstoke, has been completed.

The project was started to improve safety along the mountainous stretch of highway that leads to the Alberta border.

Some of the improvements included widening the highway from two lanes to four along a two kilometre section and adding new median barriers.

A “staging” location was also built to provide a safe location for vehicles to park in case there are closures.

“The widening of this segment of Highway 1 and the expansion of the brake-check make this a safer, more reliable drive for everyone from locals, to tourists, to commercial truck drivers carrying goods,” said Rob Fleming, minister of transportation and infrastructure.

“This project is a key part of our work to upgrade the Trans-Canada Highway from Kamloops to the Alberta border.”

The previous brake-check area could only accommodate five commercial trucks but now it can fit about 15 trucks.

Extra accelerations and deceleration lanes have also been added to the brake-check area, as well as, improved lighting and washrooms.

The Illecillewaet four-laning project, Kicking Horse Canyon project and Chase four-laning projects are just a few examples of improvements along Highway 1.
