(UPDATE: June 15 @ 2:50 pm) - The crash that shut down the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) for more than six hours today was fatal.
The BC Highway Patrol was called to the crash scene near Emerald Lake Road in Field, around 45 kilometres east of Golden, shortly before 7 am today.
According to police, initial evidence from the scene indicated that the driver of an SUV was travelling eastbound when it crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a logging truck coming the other way.
Unfortunately, the driver of the SUV did not survive. The driver of the logging truck was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"Investigators have determined that there was no criminality involved," said Cpl. Alex Bérubé. "The investigation remains with the Golden RCMP and the BC Coroners Service."
Police are still working to notify the SUV driver's next of kin and, as a result, no further information will be released at this time.
(UPDATE: June 15 @ 1:15 pm): The highway has now reopened.
Motorists have been urged to drive carefully and expect delays.
