Interior Health is warning residents in the region about a potential COVID-19 outbreak that could affect the area.
According to Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's Cheif Medical Officer of Health, on Wednesday, an outbreak of COVID-19 was reported at the Kearl Lake oil sands project north of Fort McMurray. To date, 12 people connected with this work camp have tested positive for the virus.
Interior Health is urging all residents to stay home as much as possible as many residents travel to work camps in Alberta for employment, meaning there is a chance the virus could be travelling between the communities.
"Many residents in the Interior Health region travel to work camps in Alberta for employment and that there is potential for transmission between communities and between our provinces," wrote Interior Health. "IH medical health officers recommend that people who are contacts or potential contacts from this site self-isolate for 14 days from their last exposure to the site or to their flights home."
As well, if anyone in the community experiences signs of illness, such as fever or dry cough, immediately self-isolate for 14 days.
