RCMP hoping witnesses of drowning in BC river will come forward

The Slocan Lake RCMP has appealed for witnesses after another drowning death in British Columbia.

The 35-year-old man was swimming in Slocan Lake, just north of Winlaw, around 5:40 pm on Wednesday with an acquaintance when he went under the water and failed to resurface.

His acquaintance rushed to a local business and called 911.

“Search and rescue (SAR) used a helicopter and commenced searching the river at approximately 7:40 pm,” explained Cpl. Jaime Moffat.

“However, due to the time of day, SAR was unable to use a boat to search for the man.”

Both SAR crews and the RCMP’s underwater recovery team resumed their search for the man, who’s presumed to have drowned, this morning.

The RCMP says that the area where the man went under is a well-used swimming area, which is usually shallow and has plenty of sandbars to stand on.

However, the water is high and the undercurrent is strong right now.

Anyone who was in the area and might have seen anything is asked to contact the RCMP.
